Outdoor Tiles for Patios, Terraces, Poolsides and Driveways
Outdoors, the location dictates the specification far more precisely than indoors. A balcony, a poolside and a driveway all need porcelain, but they need three quite different tiles — and the difference is usually thickness and how the tile is supported.

The pedestal system, and why roof terraces use it
A 20 mm porcelain paver is strong enough to span between four corner supports without a screed underneath. That single property makes roof terraces practical. The pavers sit on adjustable plastic pedestals over the waterproofing membrane, with an open void beneath through which rainwater drains freely, and the pedestals take up the fall of the roof so the finished terrace is dead level.
It also means any paver can be lifted by hand for access to a drain, a cable run or a membrane repair, and put straight back. Compare that with a bonded screed, where reaching a leak means breaking out the floor.
The dead load is modest — roughly 45 kg per square metre for the pavers plus pedestals — which matters on a roof with a weight limit. And because nothing is bonded, there is no adhesive to fail and no grout to crack as the structure moves.
The same pavers can be dry-laid on a compacted gravel bed for a garden path or terrace at ground level, which is the fastest way to build a patio and needs no concrete at all.

Poolside considerations
- Barefoot slip resistance — R11 minimum and R12 on any slope. Barefoot traffic on a wet surface is the most demanding slip case there is.
- Surface temperature — light tones stay usably cool in strong sun; a dark tile around a pool becomes painful to stand on.
- Chemical resistance — chlorinated and salt water both attack cementitious grout. Use an epoxy grout throughout the pool surround.
- Coping and edge pieces — order the rounded coping profile with the field tiles so the shades match.
- Fall away from the pool — so splash-out drains to a channel rather than back into the water carrying dirt.
Frequently asked questions
Can I lay outdoor porcelain tiles on grass or soil?
Not directly. A 20 mm paver can be dry-laid on a properly compacted and levelled gravel or sharp-sand bed, which is how most garden paths and dry-laid patios are built, but it needs that sub-base. Laid straight onto soil, the paver will settle unevenly and eventually crack.
What are pedestals used for?
Adjustable pedestals support 20 mm pavers above a roof or balcony deck, leaving a drainage void underneath and taking up the fall of the structure so the finished terrace is level. Any paver can be lifted later for access to the membrane below.
Are outdoor porcelain tiles slippery when wet?
Not if the correct rating is specified. R11 textured porcelain gives good wet grip. What is slippery is a polished indoor tile used outdoors, which is a common and dangerous mistake.
Can porcelain tiles take a car?
A 20 mm paver bedded in full mortar over a properly built sub-base will take a domestic vehicle. A 10 mm tile will not, whatever it is bedded on.
What tiles suit a terrace garden or roof terrace?
A 20 mm porcelain paver in an R11 finish, laid dry on pedestals or on a gravel bed. On a terrace garden the pedestal system is the important part: it lifts the paving clear of the waterproofing, lets water drain beneath and allows any slab to be lifted for access without breaking anything.
