Why granite effect dominates commercial floors

It is camouflage, and it is deliberate. A plain floor shows every mark; a floor with a dense random fleck hides them. That is why the salt-and-pepper granite look has been the default for office, retail, school and institutional floors for decades, and why it still is.

It also suits the bodies that commercial floors need. Granite effects come from pigment distribution rather than printing, which means they can be produced as double charged or full body tiles — the two constructions with a genuinely deep decorative layer. A printed granite tile exists, but it defeats the point.

For staircases it is close to ideal. Nosings take the heaviest impact in any building, and a flecked full body tread hides both the wear and any chip, because the exposed material is the same speckled body as the surface.

Where it is a poor choice is a domestic living room, where the same busyness that hides commercial wear simply reads as dated. For homes, the marble and concrete effects have largely replaced it.
