What Is a Powder Room? Meaning, Size and Tiling

A powder room is a small ground-floor washroom containing only a toilet and a basin — no bath, no shower. It is the room guests use, which is why it is worth more attention per square metre than any other room in a house.

Where the name comes from, and what it means now

The term dates from the eighteenth century, when guests would retire to a small private room to have their wigs re-powdered. The wigs went; the room and the polite euphemism stayed.

In modern usage — mostly North American, but increasingly understood everywhere — a powder room is a small washroom with a WC and a basin and nothing else. It is on the ground floor, near the entertaining rooms, and it exists so guests never have to go upstairs or into a family bathroom.

British and Indian English generally call the same room a cloakroom, a guest toilet or simply a WC. An American estate agent will call it a half bath, counting a full bathroom as four fixtures (WC, basin, bath, shower), a three-quarter bath as three, and a half bath as two.

Tiling a powder room

  • Tile it fully — this is the room to spend on — It is small enough that a premium tile costs very little in total and it is the room guests actually see.
  • Large format, not small — Fewer joints make a tiny room read as one surface. 600x1200 mm in a 0.9 m wide room sounds wrong and looks right.
  • Gloss walls if there is no window — Most powder rooms are internal. A polished wall tile bounces what light there is and stops the room feeling like a cupboard.
  • Still specify R10 on the floor — A basin means splashes. Gloss walls, matt floor.
  • A feature wall works better here than anywhere — One book-matched marble-effect wall behind the basin transforms the room, and the area is so small the cost is trivial.
  • Wall-hung fixtures buy visual space — Clear floor under a wall-hung WC and basin makes the room read substantially larger.
  • Extraction is not optional — No window means mechanical ventilation, or the grout will grow mould whatever you clean it with.

વારંવાર પૂછાતા પ્રશ્નો

What is a powder room?

A small ground-floor washroom containing only a toilet and a wash basin — no bath or shower. It is intended for guests, which is why it sits near the entertaining rooms rather than the bedrooms.

Why is it called a powder room?

From the eighteenth-century practice of retiring to a small private room to have a wig re-powdered. The wigs disappeared; the polite name for the room did not.

What is the difference between a powder room and a bathroom?

A powder room has two fixtures — WC and basin. A full bathroom has four, adding a bath and a shower. American estate agents call a powder room a half bath for exactly this reason.

What is the minimum size for a powder room?

About 0.8 x 1.4 m, roughly 12 square feet. That allows 380 mm from the centre of the WC to each side wall and 530 mm of clear floor in front of it, which is the practical floor below which the room fails inspection.

Is a powder room the same as a cloakroom?

Effectively yes. Powder room is the North American term, cloakroom the British one, and guest toilet or WC the usual description elsewhere. All describe a small washroom with a WC and basin only.
