What a wall mounted toilet needs behind the wall

A wall-hung WC is carried by a steel frame fixed to the floor and wall, with the cistern inside it. In Indian RCC and brick construction this is usually built into a false wall about 150-200 mm deep across the back of the toilet, and the top of that false wall becomes a useful tiled shelf.

Everything is decided before tiling: the frame position, the pan height, the waste connection and the supply to the cistern. Once the wall is tiled, the only access is through the flush plate opening, which is large enough to service the valve but not to move anything.

Because the waste leaves through the wall, a wall-hung pan always needs a P-trap connection. In a building plumbed for floor-outlet S-trap toilets, the drain has to be brought up into the false wall.

Which one to choose

• Choose wall mounted for small bathrooms — It saves 150-200 mm of floor depth and the clear floor makes the room look bigger.
• Choose wall mounted where cleaning matters — Hotels, hospitals and homes where the floor under the pan is mopped daily.
• Choose floor mounted on a budget — Lower total cost and no false wall to build.
• Choose floor mounted for renovations — It fits the existing drain point without breaking walls.
• Choose floor mounted where maintenance is limited — Every part of an exposed cistern can be reached and replaced easily.
