A portico is the roofed entrance to a house, carried on columns or a cantilevered slab. It is the first thing a visitor stands under, it shelters the front door from sun and rain, and in many Indian houses it doubles as the car porch.

What a portico is

A portico is a porch with a roof supported by columns, projecting from the front of a building over the main entrance. The word comes from the Latin porticus, a colonnade, and the classic image is a temple front. In houses it is usually one bay deep: enough to step out of the rain, put down shopping and unlock the door.

It is not quite the same as the spaces it is often confused with. A verandah runs along the side of a house rather than framing the door. A balcony is an upper floor platform. A car porch — porte-cochère in formal usage — is a portico large enough to drive under, and in Indian bungalows and villas the portico and the car porch are frequently the same structure.

  • Modern cantilever portico — A thin RCC slab projecting from the house with no columns, giving a clean contemporary line.

Flooring and steps for a portico

  • R11 textured tiles, never polished — Monsoon rain blows under every portico. Polished granite and gloss tiles become dangerous.
  • 20 mm pavers where cars drive — A car porch floor carries vehicle loads and needs a paver or heavy-duty parking tile on a concrete base.
  • Matching step and riser sets — Grooved nosing on the entrance steps, in the same shade as the portico floor.
  • Fall away from the door — At least 1 in 80 so rainwater runs out, not in.
  • Mid-tone colours — Very light floors show tyre marks and dust; very dark floors get hot in the sun.
