How to Clean Tiles in Kitchen — Greasy Walls, Floors and Grout
Kitchen tiles do not get dirty the way other tiles do. Cooking oil lands as a fine mist, heat bakes it into a sticky film, and dust sticks to the film. Cleaning them is mostly a matter of cutting that grease properly instead of spreading it around.
How to clean greasy kitchen wall tiles
- Wipe off loose dust first. A dry microfibre cloth. Wetting dust on a greasy wall turns it into paste.
- Use hot water and a degreaser. A few drops of dishwashing liquid in hot water handles light grease. For the sticky film behind a stove, use an alkaline kitchen degreaser.
- Let it dwell. Spray or wipe it on and leave it for five minutes. The chemistry does the work, not scrubbing.
- Wipe from the bottom up. Working upward stops dirty runs streaking over areas you have not cleaned yet.
- Scrub the grout lines. A soft toothbrush or grout brush with a baking soda paste for joints that have darkened.
- Rinse with clean water. Detergent left on the tile attracts dirt again and leaves streaks.
- Dry and buff. A dry microfibre cloth leaves glossy tiles streak-free.

What not to use on kitchen tiles
- Steel wool and scouring powder — They scratch glossy and polished glazes permanently.
- Acid on natural stone — Vinegar and lemon etch marble and granite counters and dados. Porcelain is unaffected.
- Bleach on coloured grout — It lightens the grout unevenly. Use oxygen bleach instead.
- Mixing cleaning chemicals — Bleach with ammonia or acid releases toxic gas. Use one product at a time and rinse between.
- Oily floor cleaners on vitrified tiles — Wax and oil-based products leave a slippery film and dull the surface.

Choosing kitchen tiles that are easier to clean
Glossy glazed tiles are the easiest wall surface to wipe, because grease has nothing to key into. Heavily textured, 3D or rustic tiles look good in a showroom and collect grease in every recess behind a hob.
Fewer joints means less cleaning. A 300x600 mm or larger wall tile, or a single porcelain slab behind the counter, removes most of the grout lines where stains actually live. Where there is grout, epoxy grout behind the stove is the single most effective upgrade: it does not absorb oil or turmeric at all.
For the floor, choose a matt or lightly textured vitrified tile. It hides footprints and grips when oil or water is spilled, which matters more in a kitchen than in any other room.

Can I use vinegar to clean kitchen tiles?
On porcelain and vitrified tiles, diluted vinegar is safe and removes hard water marks. Never use it on marble, granite or cementitious surfaces, which it etches, and do not use it as your routine cleaner on grout.
