Entryway and Foyer Tiles — The Hardest-Worked Floor in a Building

Grit is the whole problem

Sand and grit are harder than tile glaze. Underfoot they act as an abrasive, and because everyone entering a building walks the same three-metre line, the wear concentrates into a lane rather than spreading out. That is why entrance floors develop a visibly dull path while the edges still look new.

Two things fix it. The first is a matwell — a recessed barrier matting section immediately inside the door, long enough for three or four footfalls. Anything shorter does not remove enough. This single detail extends the life of an entrance floor more than any tile specification can.

The second is the tile itself: full body porcelain, textured, in a mid tone. Full body because abrasion exposes the same material rather than a pale body, so wear does not show as a colour change. Textured because the floor will be wet whenever it rains. Mid tone because pale floors show the dirt walked in and dark floors show every water spot and salt mark.

Specify R11 here even indoors. A polished entrance floor with rain on it is one of the most reliable ways to generate a slip claim in a commercial building.

What to specify

Design moves that work in an entrance

• A patterned inset with a plain border — Defines the entrance as a space of its own without a wall, and hides traffic wear better than a plain floor.
• Run the hall tile lengthwise — The long dimension along the corridor stretches it visually. Laid across, it makes a narrow hall look narrower.
• Carry one material through to adjoining rooms — Continuing the floor through openings makes a small entrance read as part of a larger space.
• Change material at the threshold, not mid-room — A junction in a doorway reads as deliberate; one in the middle of a floor reads as a mistake.
• Border the perimeter in a contrasting tone — A classic heritage hall treatment, and it neatly absorbs the cuts against irregular walls.
• Keep attic stock — This floor will be damaged sooner than any other in the building.
