What dado and dadoing mean

The word comes from classical architecture, where the dado is the lower band of a wall between the skirting and a dado rail. In India it has come to mean any wall tiling that protects a working or wet area — the strip behind the kitchen counter, the walls of a bathroom, the area around a wash basin.

On a bill of quantities, "dadoing" is measured separately from flooring because it is laid differently: wall adhesive, lighter tiles, more cutting around switches and pipes. Dado tiles are therefore usually glazed ceramic or GVT wall tiles, though a vitrified floor tile or a porcelain slab works just as well and is increasingly used for a seamless look.

• Subway tiles — 75x300 or 100x300 mm in a brick bond. Timeless, and forgiving of uneven walls.
• Large glossy wall tiles — 300x600 or 600x1200 mm with minimal joints, the easiest dado to keep clean.
• Porcelain slab behind the counter — A single 800x1600 or 1200x2400 mm slab, matched to the counter, with no grout at all.
• Highlighter band — Plain tiles with one row of patterned or 3D highlighter tiles at eye level.
• Moroccan and patterned tiles — Colourful encaustic-look tiles for a traditional or cafe-style kitchen.
• Marble-look dado — Statuario or onyx effect for a premium open kitchen that faces the living room.
• Wood or stone look — Warm textures for rustic and contemporary kitchens — keep them smooth behind the hob.

Getting a kitchen dado right

• Start the layout at the counter, not the floor — The first full row should sit on the counter top so the visible line is a whole tile.
• Take it all the way to the wall cabinets — A painted gap between the dado and the cabinets stains and looks unfinished.
• Mark the switches and sockets first — Plan tile joints to fall through switch plates, not a sliver of tile beside them.
• Use epoxy grout behind the hob — It does not absorb oil or turmeric, so the joints stay clean.
• Choose a smooth glaze near the stove — Textured and 3D tiles trap grease; save them for walls away from cooking.
• Order 10% extra — Dado work involves more cuts than flooring, around windows, pipes and sockets.
