A urinal bowl itself is small; what decides whether a washroom works is the height it is fixed at and the space between each one. These are the standard urinal sizes and the clearances to plan around before the waste points are set.

Planning a row of urinals

Start from the spacing, not the bowl. A row of urinals at 700-750 mm centres feels comfortable and keeps splashes off the neighbour; at the 600 mm minimum it works, but only with privacy screens. Add 380-450 mm from the last urinal centre to any side wall.

Include at least one lower urinal in any public washroom — rim at about 430 mm — for children and wheelchair users. It costs nothing extra and saves a separate accessible fixture being used for the purpose.

Fix the waste and supply points only once the model is chosen. Outlet height and position vary between models, and a waste point set for one urinal can leave another sitting at the wrong height. Tile the wall behind the row to at least 1200 mm with a matt floor tile underneath, because urinal areas are cleaned wet every day.
