Basin top materials

• Porcelain slab — 12 mm slab cut to size. Does not stain, etch or need sealing, and can match the wall tiles exactly.
• Granite — The traditional Indian basin top. Hard and durable; needs occasional sealing and shows water rings on dark polished stone.
• Quartz — Consistent colour and low maintenance, but can discolour in direct sunlight.
• Marble — Beautiful and soft. Etched by soap, toothpaste and acidic cleaners, so it dulls around the basin.
• Tiled counter — The budget option on a masonry or ply base. Use large tiles and epoxy grout to minimise joints.
• Integrated ceramic basin-counter — Basin and counter in one piece with no joint at all — the easiest to keep clean.

• Floating counter with open shelf — A wall-hung slab with a shelf below keeps the floor clear and looks light in a small space.
• Dining area basin niche — The basin set in a recessed niche with a mirror, lighting and a feature tile — the modern answer for a wash basin in the hall.
• Vessel bowl on a wood-look counter — A round counter-top basin on a warm wood-effect slab.
• Waterfall slab — The counter slab continues down the side to the floor for a seamless, solid look.
• Book-matched marble-look wall — A mirror-image marble panel behind the basin turns a plain counter into a feature.
• Fluted or ribbed front — A fluted cabinet or tiled front below the counter adds texture.

Designing a wash basin in the hall or dining area

A dining area wash basin is used after every meal and seen by every guest, so it has to be both hard-wearing and presentable. Plan a counter at least 600 mm long so there is somewhere to put a soap dispenser and hand towel, and tile the wall behind it at least 2-3 ft above the counter — water splashes further than it seems.

Give it its own light. A basin in a corner of the dining room is often lit only from behind, which puts the user's face in shadow in the mirror. A mirror light or a downlighter above the basin solves it.

Choose a counter material that does not mark. Porcelain slab and quartz shrug off soap, turmeric and hard water. Polished marble and dark granite show every water ring, which is exactly the wrong property for a surface that is wet several times a day.
