How to Remove Scratches from Tile — Metal Marks, Light Scratches and Deep Damage

Most "scratches" on a tile floor are not scratches at all — they are metal or rubber left on the surface, and they come off in minutes. A true scratch cuts into the glaze, and what you can do about it depends entirely on what kind of tile it is.

First, identify the mark

Run a fingernail across it. If the nail does not catch, it is almost certainly something on the surface rather than a cut into it.

How to remove light scratches and marks

  1. Clean the area. Grit left on the tile will create new scratches while you work.
  2. Try the gentlest method first. A damp melamine sponge lifts most metal and rubber marks on its own.
  3. Move to a mild abrasive cream. Apply with a soft nylon pad in small circles, and wipe off to check progress every few seconds.
  4. For polished tiles, use a polishing paste. A porcelain tile polishing compound on a felt pad, light pressure only. Test on a spare tile or a hidden corner first.
  5. Rinse and dry. Residue from pastes leaves a haze that looks like a new mark.
  6. Stop if the pattern changes. On printed tiles the design sits in a thin glaze layer. Heavy polishing can cut through it.

Deep scratches: repair, re-polish or replace

A scratch that has gone through the glaze of a GVT or PGVT tile cannot be polished out, because underneath the glaze is a plain body of a different colour. It can be disguised with a colour-matched epoxy or porcelain repair filler, which works well on small chips and short lines, especially on patterned and marble-look tiles where the eye does not find it easily.

Full body and double charged tiles behave differently. The colour runs deep into the tile, so a professional can hone the scratch out with diamond pads and re-polish the surface without exposing a different material underneath. This is one of the practical reasons full body tiles are specified for shops and offices.

Where a scratch is long, deep and in the middle of a room, replacing the tile is usually the neatest answer. It is only possible if spare tiles from the same batch were kept — which is why buying 10 per cent extra and storing a box is worth it.

How to stop tiles scratching

  • Mat every entrance — Sand and grit are harder than glaze and cause almost all real scratches.
  • Fit felt pads to furniture — Especially chairs and tables that move daily.
  • Lift, do not drag — Appliances and heavy furniture should be lifted or moved on a sheet.
  • Sweep before mopping — A wet mop drags grit across the surface.
  • Choose matt or satin in busy areas — Matt finishes diffuse light and hide the fine scratches that high gloss shows.
